Marking a significant development for the fishermen community in Andhra Pradesh, Minister for Agriculture Kakani Govardhan Reddy performed the ‘bhumi puja’ for a state-of-the-art fishing jetty in Nelathuru, Muthukur mandal of Nellore district on Sunday, December 17.
Addressing a gathering of fishermen and officials, Minister Govardhan Reddy reiterated the commitment of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government to bring about development and positive change in the lives of fishermen. The proposed fishing jetty, equipped with a berth for 400 boats, aims to modernize fishing harbors and provide logistical support, benefiting approximately 2,000 fishermen in Nellore district.
“The new fishing jetty will fulfill the decades-long dream of the fishermen in Nellore district. Around 2,000 fishermen will gain employment with the construction of the jetty at an estimated cost of ₹25 crore. The works will commence promptly,” he announced.
Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, during his visit to Muthukuru for the inauguration of the third unit of Genco, released non-fishermen package funds and laid the foundation stone for the fishing jetty. The non-fishermen package, benefiting over 17,000 families with white ration cards in Muthukuru mandal, was inaugurated to uplift the local community.
Minister Govardhan Reddy acknowledged that the project faced delays due to technical reasons but affirmed that the fishing jetty’s construction would now move forward with the cooperation of Krishnapatnam Port.
The proposed jetty is designed to accommodate 400 boats simultaneously, featuring modern facilities. Minister Govardhan Reddy emphasized the state government’s dedication to the welfare of fishermen, including financial assistance during the annual fishing ban period.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Joint Director (Fisheries) Nageswara Rao, officials from revenue and panchayat raj Departments, and leaders from the fishermen community.
