Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a key player in both coastal and freshwater aquaculture, according to Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development Minister Seediri Appalaraju. Speaking at the Fisheries and Aquaculture conference organized by the CII AP, the minister highlighted the state’s effective strategy, emphasizing the pivotal role played by the private sector in pre and post-harvest infrastructure.

Minister Appalaraju urged industry collaboration with the department to develop a robust plan for infrastructure, aiming to increase income for fishers and fish farmers while ensuring safe and nutritious food for consumers. The focus extends to minimizing post-harvest losses and enhancing value addition across the supply chain.

The need for improved value addition, processing, handling, and cleanliness in fish markets was emphasized to ensure fair returns for fishermen and quality assurance for consumers. Arabind Das, Co-Chairman of the CII National Committee on Fisheries, expressed the organization’s commitment to partnering with the State government to position Andhra Pradesh as a leading investment destination and export hub for marine products.

Ravindranath Reddy, Deputy CEO of the AP Maritime Board, disclosed that the government is actively considering a policy to promote cage culture of fish along the coast. Plans include the establishment of 35 Integrated Aqua Labs to provide aqua input testing facilities for farmers and the establishment of the AP Fisheries University (APFU) to develop skilled manpower in the sector. This comprehensive approach aims to further elevate Andhra Pradesh’s standing in the national and international fisheries landscape.
