Andhra Pradesh Leads in Fishing and Aquaculture Sector

In a recent report by the National Statistics Office, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in fishing and aquaculture, commanding a significant 40.9% share in the sector. Following Andhra Pradesh are West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar.

Notably, West Bengal’s contribution to India’s total output in this sector has seen a decline from 24.6% in 2011-12 to 14.4% in 2022-23. In contrast, both Odisha and Bihar have shown an increase in their shares over the same period.

Growth in Fishing and Aquaculture Output

The report highlights a steady increase in the output of the fishing and aquaculture sub-sector, which grew from approximately ₹80,000 crore in 2011-12 to about ₹1,95,000 crore in 2022-23. This includes the total production of both inland and marine prawn fishing.

Livestock Sub-Sector Trends

The livestock sub-sector has also shown a consistent upward trend from 2011-12 to 2022-23. Within this sector, milk, meat, and eggs have recorded increasing output, comprising 66.5%, 23.6%, and 3.7% respectively of the total livestock output in 2022-23, compared to 67.2%, 19.7%, and 3.4% in 2011-12.

Key Contributors in Livestock Output

Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan together accounted for about a quarter of the livestock sub-sector output, with Tamil Nadu showing a faster increase during this period. Uttar Pradesh also dominated the sugar crop output, holding nearly 41% share in 2011-12 and exceeding 50% in 2022-23. Maharashtra followed with 19%, while Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar had shares of 8.9%, 3.9%, and 3.3% respectively. Other states contributed the remaining 11.4%.

Fruit and Vegetable Output

In the fruits category, bananas surpassed mangoes in value output in 2022-23, holding shares of 10.9% and 10% respectively, together representing over one-fifth of the total fruit output. Among vegetables, potato and onion were the top contributors, accounting for about 15% of the group’s output, while floriculture made up about 7%.

Economic Contribution of Agriculture

The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors accounted for 18.2% of the gross value added (GVA) at current prices in 2022-23. This is a slight decrease from 20.4% in 2020-21 and 18.9% in 2021-22.

India ranks second worldwide in arable land (155.37 million hectares), third in cereal production, and second in the production of groundnuts, fruits, vegetables, sugarcane, tea, and jute. The country boasts the largest herds of buffalo and goat, the second largest of cattle and sheep, and ranks seventh in chicken population. Additionally, India is the largest milk producer, second in egg production, and fifth in meat production as of 2020.

These statistics underscore India’s significant role in global agriculture and its diverse agricultural output across various sectors.
