Bangladesh Crab Exports Stage Remarkable Comeback, Boosting Coastal Growers

Crab exports from Bangladesh have experienced a significant rebound, offering a lifeline to growers in coastal districts who cultivate these sea creatures for international trade. Despite facing challenges during the Covid-19 outbreak, the country has successfully shipped around 7,500 tonnes of crabs annually over the last two fiscal years, with China being the primary destination.

Data from the Department of Fisheries (DoF) reveals that crab exports reached 7,452 tonnes in fiscal year (FY) 2022-23, slightly lower than the previous year but higher than three years ago. This recovery follows the issuance of certificates by the DoF to exporters, aligning with the requirements of Chinese authorities for the export of crabs and eel fish.

In June 2020, China suspended crab and eel fish imports from Bangladesh due to the detection of lead and cadmium in some consignments. To address this, the fisheries office implemented a surveillance system, trained farmers in safe rearing practices, and began testing consignments before clearing exports.

Sujit Chatterjee, Deputy Director of Fish Inspection and Quality Control at the DoF, stated, “We are issuing certificates in line with GACC standards, training farmers, and stakeholders to fulfil the requirements of Chinese authorities to promote exports.” He noted that exporters are now complying with rules, obtaining better prices, and experiencing reduced mortality rates.

Exports to China have resumed since FY 2022-21, with 14 local exporters receiving permission, and 18 firms’ applications under review by Chinese authorities. Shakawat Hossain Sumon, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Live and Chilled Food Exporters Association, mentioned that 90 percent of the exported crabs go to China, while Thailand and Malaysia are also significant destinations.

Jahidur Rahman Milton, a crab grower in Khulna, shared that many farmers suspended crab farming due to export declines in 2020 and 2021. However, demand and prices have recovered since last year, prompting growers to resume farming. The resurgence in exports has provided a much-needed boost to coastal farmers, with many planning to rejoin the industry this year.

Crab, a popular and expensive food in China, faces competition from exporters in Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and India. Despite the challenges, the rebound in crab exports signifies positive momentum for Bangladesh’s aquaculture industry.
