The picturesque coastal town of Benalmádena was the center of maritime excitement this past weekend as it hosted the XXVIII International Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament. This prestigious event, renowned for attracting top fishing talent, saw around 30 traditional fishing boats compete in challenging conditions.

The highlight of the tournament was the boat Poseidon, owned by Pedro Núñez. Poseidon not only achieved the highest total volume of catches, earning it first place overall, but also won the special award of 1,000 euros for the heaviest single catch. The prize-winning catch was a remarkable 11.5-kilo cod, demonstrating both skill and a bit of luck.

In the competition for the heaviest single catch, Yedra IV, with Jesús Badía at the helm, secured second place. La Perla Blanca, owned by Javier Ruíz Ariza, followed closely to claim third place. These awards were part of a series of categories that recognized various achievements in the tournament.

The event concluded with a traditional awards ceremony held at Hotel Alay, where local councillors and event sponsors gathered to celebrate the participants’ successes. The ceremony underscored the importance of community involvement and support for the tournament.

In addition to its competitive spirit, the tournament is celebrated for its charitable contributions. All catches from the event are donated to local charities, which distribute them among soup kitchens, reflecting the tournament’s commitment to supporting those in need. This charitable aspect enhances the tournament’s reputation as a beloved tradition in Andalucía, combining competitive fishing with community service.
