In a bid to empower farmers and promote sustainable aquaculture practices, the Fisheries Department of Tamil Nadu introduced Bio Fish Tanks in 2023, proving to be a game-changer for many. This initiative enables farmers to rear fish at a low cost, thanks to subsidized rates provided by the government.
Sebasthiyar, a resident of Thirukkanur Patti village in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, is one such beneficiary of the Bio Fish Tank scheme. He shared insights into the specifications of this innovative venture and highlighted the groups that stand to benefit the most from it. Speaking about his experience, Sebastiyar mentioned that the Fisheries Department installed a bio fish tank at his home using tarpaulin and provided him with the necessary training to manage it effectively. The primary objective of these tanks is to ensure efficient water usage for fish growth.
While Sebastiyar acknowledged that setting up a bio-fish tank may not be profitable for everyone, he highlighted its potential for small-scale businesses. Each tank can accommodate around 450 fish, but Sebastiyar has maximized his yield by using two tanks to rear up to 1000 fish at a time. Only specific fish varieties, such as tilapia, jalebi, and lobster, are suitable for cultivation in these tanks due to their adaptability and economic viability.Aside from economic benefits, Sebastiyar noted that bio fish tanks offer additional advantages, including protection from predators like crows and cranes, which is not feasible in open water bodies. This added security ensures better yields and minimizes losses for farmers.
Embracing this opportunity, Sebastiyar has ventured into the fish-selling business, attracting customers from his village and neighboring areas. To avail themselves of this scheme, individuals can approach the Fisheries Department office in their respective districts, submit necessary documents, and receive substantial subsidies—40 percent for men and 60 percent for women.Overall, the introduction of bio fish tanks is transforming the aquaculture landscape in Tamil Nadu, empowering farmers to enhance their income and adopt sustainable practices for long-term prosperity.
