CENTRE TO BUILD ₹400 CRORE FISHING HARBOUR AT KOTHAPATNAM

by Fishery News

The Union government has approved the construction of a fishing harbour at Kothapatnam, near Ongole, with a budget of ₹400 crore. The project will commence as soon as the state government provides the required 40 acres of land.

This harbour has been a long-standing aspiration of the fishermen in Prakasam district, who have faced recurring challenges due to cyclones and lack of proper infrastructure. Fishermen often suffered losses as they had to sell their catch at lower prices in other regions or deal with damages to their boats during adverse weather conditions.

The demand for a harbour at Kothapatnam or Vadarevu has been raised consistently over the years. Responding to these requests, the state government initiated steps in 2017 to establish marine infrastructure projects, following a consultant’s Rapid Need Assessment and Pre-Feasibility Study.

The study recommended comprehensive facilities at Kothapatnam, including a breakwater, quay, fish handling and auction halls, fishermen gear sheds, net mending sheds, toilets, boat repair yards, and parking areas. These facilities aim to enhance safety and efficiency for the fishing community.

Despite discussions and public hearings in 2020, the plans for harbours at Kothapatnam and Vodarevu failed to progress significantly. However, with the Union government’s recent approval, hopes are now renewed for better infrastructure to support the fishermen.

The project is expected to boost the livelihoods of the local fishing community, improve safety measures, and streamline the handling and sale of fish products in the region.
