The fishing boat operators in Kerala are vehemently opposing the proposal to install windmills in coastal waters within 12 nautical miles, expressing concerns about the potential impact on fishing activities.

The All Kerala Fishing Boat Operators Association, led by General Secretary Joseph Xavier Kalapurackal, contends that while they do not oppose the establishment of windmills, such infrastructure should be situated on the shores to avoid disrupting free fishing.

Kalapurackal emphasized their stance during the submission of a memorandum to NITI Aayog members visiting Kochi. The memorandum not only conveyed the industry’s resistance to the proposed windmill installation but also suggested various innovative measures to enhance the profitability of sea fishing.

The fishing community is advocating for solutions that support sustainable energy development without compromising their livelihoods.
