Congress Fishermen’s Cell Advocates for Economic Empowerment of Fishing Community

by Fishery News

The Fishermen’s Cell of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has asked CM Siddaramaiah to launch new schemes focusing on the betterment of the livelihoods of the fishermen tribes of the state.

The fishermen’s cell of the municipal district congress committee organized a municipal-level convention. Mr. Manjunath Sunagar, President of the Cell, highlighted the ever-growing economic problems faced by the fishermen despite the progress of the fishing industry. He mentioned the problems encountered by fishermen, which cause them to be constantly in a financial hotspot despite the machinery upgrade.

Sunagar insisted on the importance of compiling a list of demands to be handed to Hon’ble CM Siddaramaiah, who has, in the wake of the recent state budget introduction, already demonstrated his commitment to the community by earmarking funds for 10,000 fishermen families to build homes. Lastly, Sunagar highlighted some of the promises in the party’s election manifesto, which they won, such as increasing interest-free loans for fisherwomen and scholarships for the children of the community.

B.J. Vijaykumar, President of the Mysuru District Congress Committee, is another who is in one voice with the Sunagar’s view of fishing as a “sacred and chaste” profession. He recognized the state budget’s all-in amount of ₹3000 crore for the fishermen community’s social welfare, which clearly showed the government’s stand on inclusivity and social justice.

Vijaykumar, moreover, spoke in high quality of the history behind the men of the sea, reminding them that during Gandhiji’s Dandi March they were the most significant segment, and in conclusion, he evoked the dream of a society that will be characterized by unity as prophesied in the vision of Dr. Ambedkar on a social democracy.

The Mysore district fish market’s concerns were stated by Vijaykumar and submitted to Sunagar, who evidently demonstrates his public party’s commitment to solving fishing community problems.
