The fisheries sector in India is the third-largest globally, with a production of 162.48 lakh tonnes in 2021-22. It plays a significant role in agricultural exports, with marine export earnings reaching an all-time high of Rs. 63,969 crores in 2022-23. NFDB’s mandate is to further this growth sustainably, utilising modern technology and coordinated efforts.
NFDB aims to improve infrastructure for fish handling, preservation, and marketing, benefiting both fishers and consumers. The board’s focus extends beyond production to enhancing livelihoods, promoting entrepreneurship, and increasing fish consumption nationwide.
Aligned with the “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat” initiative, NFDB collaborates with governmental and research institutions to address challenges such as market fluctuations, resource management, and climate change in the fisheries sector.
