The East Coast Conservation Team (ECCT), dedicated to preserving marine biodiversity along Visakhapatnam’s coastline, has unveiled a stunning marine life-themed table-top calendar for 2025. Designed to appeal to marine enthusiasts, nature lovers, and art admirers, this 8×5-inch calendar showcases the vibrant underwater world of Visakhapatnam’s tidal zones while supporting a vital cause.
A VISUAL JOURNEY UNDER THE WAVES
Featuring striking photographs of marine species like zoanthids, nudibranchs, electric blue hermit crabs, and the recently recorded polyclad flatworm, the calendar offers an immersive glimpse into marine life. Other captivating species include the charismatic combtooth blenny and the elusive sea dragons, making it a delightful treat for marine enthusiasts.
The photographs were skillfully captured by ECCT founder Sri Chakra Pranav Tamarapalli and photographer Manish Manick, with most images taken using the waterproof Olympus TG6 camera. “The TG6 allowed us to document intricate details of marine species in their natural habitat, even under challenging underwater conditions,” says Pranav.
CELEBRATING MARINE BIODIVERSITY
The calendar is more than just an artistic endeavor; it reflects years of documentation by ECCT, which has catalogued over 300 marine species from the region. Each month features a different species, accompanied by insights into its habitat, behavior, and ecological significance. The polyclad flatworm, a new discovery for the area, highlights the need for ongoing exploration, while the electric blue hermit crab showcases the vibrant biodiversity of intertidal zones.
A CALL TO ACTION FOR CONSERVATION
Through this calendar, the ECCT aims to raise awareness and inspire citizens to actively participate in marine conservation. “Our coastline is a treasure trove of biodiversity,” says Pranav, adding, “We hope to spark curiosity and foster a sense of responsibility among the people of Visakhapatnam.”
Proceeds from calendar sales will directly support ECCT’s ongoing research and conservation projects. Available for advance orders, this unique calendar is not just a desk accessory but also a step towards protecting Visakhapatnam’s rich marine ecosystems.
