European Union Boosts WTO’s Fisheries Funding Mechanism with EUR 1 Million Contribution

by Fishery News

The European Union (EU) has contributed EUR 1 million (approximately CHF 957,000) to the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Fisheries Funding Mechanism. The donation, presented by Ambassador João Aguiar Machado to WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on November 23, aims to assist developing and least-developed members in implementing the pivotal Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS).

Expressing gratitude for the EU’s generous donation, Director-General Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the contribution’s crucial role in expanding global efforts toward sustainable marine fisheries. She emphasized the timely support from the EU as the international community strives for the entry into force of the AFS.

Ambassador Aguiar Machado underlined the EU’s commitment to the AFS, considering it a vital step in safeguarding ocean health and a positive indicator of the WTO’s ability to address global challenges. The EU’s EUR 1 million contribution is not only a financial endorsement but also a signal of dedication to the proper implementation of the AFS.

This donation adds to the EU’s cumulative contribution, which now stands at EUR 7.5 million, including individual contributions from member states such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. The funds received will play a crucial role in assisting member countries in adjusting their legislative frameworks and fulfilling transparency and notification obligations as part of their commitment to the AFS.

The AFS will come into force upon acceptance by two-thirds of the WTO membership. With nearly half of the required support already secured, the EU’s latest contribution reinforces the momentum toward the Agreement’s implementation. The voluntary funding mechanism, facilitated by the WTO in collaboration with partner organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the World Bank Group, ensures targeted technical assistance and capacity building.

As discussions progress towards the 13th Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi, the EU urges all members to ratify the AFS promptly, signalling a collective commitment to sustainable fisheries management. The EU’s continuous support, spanning back to 2003, underscores its dedication to fostering global cooperation in addressing pressing challenges, with the current contribution totalling CHF 32,504,606.
