Course Objectives:

  • To familiarize participants with the basics of shrimp production systems, shrimp industry scenario, shrimp crop insurance, risks faced by shrimp farmers, and their mitigation strategies.
  • To impart knowledge and skills in shrimp crop insurance, surveying, preparation of crop insurance documents, loss assessment, and insurance claim management.

Course Contents:

  1. Shrimp Farming and Industry
  • Global and Indian Shrimp Industry: Growth trends in production, major markets, export/domestic market value chain, institutional and regulatory framework for aquaculture.
  • Shrimp Farming and Production Systems: Pond preparation, seed stocking, pond water quality management, feeding management, biosecurity and disease management, harvesting, and handling.
  • Risks and Mitigation: Economics of shrimp farming, sources of various risks, disease risk, climatic risk, price risk, risk mitigation strategies, species and system diversification, better management practices, technology, and innovation in brackish water aquaculture.
  1. Shrimp Crop Insurance
  • Insurance Basics: Understanding what, when, why, and how of insurance/crop insurance; scope for crop insurance in Indian shrimp farming.
  • Shrimp Crop Insurance: Available insurance products, insurance life cycle and processes, government schemes and support, insurance regulation, and legal framework.
  • Survey and Loss Assessment: Insuring shrimp crops, shrimp farm/pond survey, loss and damage assessment methods, tools and processes, claim process, and claim settlement.

Target Participants:

Working professionals, consultants, executives in the insurance and banking sectors, shrimp industry, development agencies, and fresh graduates seeking opportunities in the shrimp industry. A maximum of 40 participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Preference will be given to candidates nominated and sponsored by industry or government agencies.

Course Fee:

  • Staff from Insurance & Banking Sector, Private/Corporate Sector, Entrepreneurs: INR 12,440
  • Staff from Development Departments, Academic & Research Institutions (Public Sector/Government Employees): INR 7,720
  • Farmers, Students, and Research Scholars: INR 4,180

Course fee is inclusive of GST and covers course material, field visits, working lunch, and refreshments on all five days. It does not cover boarding, lodging, and other travel expenses.

Boarding and Lodging:

Boarding and lodging facilities (Guest House/Trainees Hostel) are available at ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre Campus (venue). Candidates requiring accommodation should contact the Course Coordinator (Dr. T.K. Ghoshal) for further details and confirmation. Payment, based on actuals, can be made on arrival. Note that the course fee does not cover travel expenses to the venue or accommodation costs, which must be borne by the candidate or the sponsoring agency.

Program Date & Venue:

This program is the third in a series of three programs and will be held from 22-26 July at ICAR-CIFE, Kolkata Campus, located at 32, GN Block, Sector V, Bidhan Nagar, Kolkata, West Bengal-700091. The first and second programs were successfully held at ICAR-CIBA, Chennai from 19-23 Feb 2024, and at ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai from 29 Apr – 3 May 2024, respectively.
