As a tremendous success, Nitte University, Mangalore, was recognised by the United Nations for the attempts against antimicrobial resistance and for the assurance of the safety of aquaculture. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN has chosen Nitte University as just one of the four centres worldwide for this extremely important work The University has been acknowledged as the institution with the central role in the antimicrobial resistance fight, as superbugs also called due to their ability to overcome antibiotics.
The Government of India’s support shows the university’s determination which is aligned with the goals of popular institutions like the US and the China. The NUCSER (Nitte’s Centre for Science Education & Research) is one of the leading research and education centers on antimicrobial resistance, which this field has been for years. NUCSER adopts holistically the “One Health” approach that brings into focus the linkages between human, animal, and environmental health in the fight against the antimicrobial resistance.
By virtue of its multidisciplinary academic programmes, Nitte University is educating the next generation of experts in biomedical science, food safety, microbiology, and many other fields so that they can combat the menace of antimicrobial resistance effectively. The success can be taken as proof of Nitte University’s solid relationship with FAO since long ago which resulted in creating awareness and imparting knowledge in the aquaculture and animal production sector.
Dr.Indrani Karunasagar and Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, multi-faceted people who were the backbone of the joint venture, were present at the launch event organized by FAO Rome. In conclusion, Nitte University is planning its 2024 International One Health Festival that will gather international leaders to share their best practices in combating antimicrobial resistance. Other than that, Nitte is collaborating with FAO to produce guidelines on surveillance of antibiotic use and on the assessment of AMR in aquatic settings.
Under the leadership of Nitte University, India makes good progress against antimicrobial resistance on the world-wide scale, providing a better life for future generations.
