Dr. S. Ayyappan, the former DG of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), emphasized the centrality of the fisheries sector to food security and livelihoods for fishermen in India. Dr. Ayyappan stressed the fact that fisheries, fishers, and their activities are integral parts of the Blue Economy, and therefore, scientists and policymakers should pay special attention to them. With regard to the pressing crises of climate change and marine pollution, Dr. Ayyappan pointed out the fact that research needs to be focused on devising solutions that can be used to protect both livelihoods and marine ecosystems. Well-known for his important works on Indian fisheries research, Dr. Ayyappan was awarded an honorary fellowship by the Marine Biological Association of India (MBAI).
Dr.Ayyappan further emphasized the importance of research funding and observed that substantial social benefits arise from research investments. He praised the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) for its trailblazing research endeavors in the sector, underscoring the need for ongoing innovations and partnerships to tackle emerging issues. According to Dr. Ayyappan’s views, the significance of the fisheries sector to India’s economy and the urgent need to act together to address the emerging problems are highlighted as the summary of his points. Through research and innovation, India can reinforce food production and income-generating systems and guarantee environmentally friendly management of marine resources.
