Goa’s Fisheries Sector Receives a Boost with a Rs 310 Crore Infusion for Modernization and Expansion

by Fishery News

The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has allocated Rs 310 crore to Goa under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), marking a substantial push for the state’s fisheries sector. With a central contribution of Rs 120 crore, this funding is dedicated to modernizing and expanding the fisheries infrastructure in Goa, ultimately aiming to enhance productivity and improve the lives of local fishermen.

During discussions in the Rajya Sabha, the Ministry, in response to inquiries from MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, outlined an encompassing strategy for the comprehensive development of Goa’s fisheries. The key facets of this strategy include support for traditional fishermen, modernization and technology integration, deep-sea fishing advancements, and skills enhancement and training.

The initiative focuses on providing vital support to traditional fishermen by granting access to cutting-edge communication and tracking devices, safety kits for sea navigation, insurance coverage, and avenues for alternative livelihoods.

The allocated funds will be directed towards the construction of innovative ponds, installation of fish cages, promotion of ornamental fisheries, and the establishment of fish feed mills. These initiatives, leveraging state-of-the-art technology, are designed to augment productivity and boost income generation.

The scheme aims to fortify capabilities in deep-sea fishing by facilitating the acquisition of modern vessels, thereby expanding the reach and catch potential of local fishermen. Comprehensive training programs will be rolled out to equip fishermen with the requisite knowledge and skills to proficiently operate modern equipment, adopt sustainable fishing practices, and enhance overall efficiency.

Having witnessed significant progress under PMMSY, with approvals totalling Rs 107.9 crore over the past three years for various developmental projects, Goa’s current fish productivity stands at an impressive 3-4 tonnes/hectare.

The injection of an additional Rs 310 crore is anticipated to propel Goa’s fisheries sector even further, cultivating a dynamic and sustainable industry that benefits both fishermen and consumers.

The focus on modernization, combined with skill development and technology integration, is poised to empower fishermen, elevate their livelihoods, and contribute significantly to the overall economic development of the state.
