The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture, Chennai, recently organised a workshop on Smart Aquaculture 2024′ from March 22nd to 23rd, aimed at promoting the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in aquaculture management.
Key figures present at the event included Dr. Santhana Krishnan, CEO of Marine Technologies Pvt Ltd., Chennai, and Dr. K.K. Lal, Director of ICAR-CIBA.
The workshop facilitated interaction among biologists, software specialists, data scientists, and engineers, fostering potential collaborations. Areas identified for initial focus included geo-spatial mapping for site selection, image screening for biomass estimation, laser systems for grading, digitisation of farm-level data, automation of pumps and aerators, and water quality monitoring. These advancements aim to enable remote monitoring and data-driven decision-making, crucial for compliance certification and accessing formal finance.
A panel discussion during the workshop explored the effective utilisation of AI and IoT technologies in aquaculture operations, conceptualising a roadmap for their future application in shaping the country’s aquatic food production.
The event concluded with the recognition of winners from an annual essay competition, along with the awarding of prizes and certificates.
The workshop served as a significant platform for industry stakeholders to delve into the potential of AI and IoT in revolutionising aquaculture practices, paving the way for enhanced efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in the sector.
