The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) held its convocation ceremony in Mumbai, conferring degrees on 90 Master’s and 32 Ph.D. students. Dr. Ravishankar C.N., the Director and Vice Chancellor of ICAR-CIFE, bestowed the degrees upon the graduates. Renowned as a Centre of Excellence in Fisheries Higher Education, ICAR-CIFE stands as the sole university globally producing master’s and doctoral students in 11 highly specialised fisheries disciplines.
Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) & Secretary of the Department of Science and Industrial Research, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In her address, she applauded the pivotal role of professional fisheries education in supporting the flourishing sector, employing millions across India. Encouraging the graduating students to contribute to the nation through their work, she commended the presence of many female graduates and urged them to embark on entrepreneurial ventures.
Highlighting the significance of aquaculture in India’s economic landscape, Dr. Kalaiselvi noted the sector’s substantial contribution to the GDP and export earnings. She lauded the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana in supporting fishers and farmers, enhancing innovation, and modernising fisheries management practices.
Acknowledging ICAR-CIFE’s contributions, particularly in developing eco-friendly aquaculture technologies, Dr. Kalaiselvi praised the institute’s efforts in promoting shrimp aquaculture and genetic improvement of indigenous fish species. She emphasised the critical role of fisheries research and education in meeting global food demands by 2050, underscoring the need for innovation and expansion in fish farming and post-harvest practices.
The convocation ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Dr. R. C. Agarwal and Dr. Joykrushna Jena, reflecting the institute’s esteemed stature in the field of fisheries education and research.
