Barrackpore: The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) conducted a comprehensive 7-day capacity building program on “Inland Fisheries Management” for fish farmers in Nawada District, Bihar, recently.
Dr. B.K. Das, interacting with participants, emphasized the importance of developing knowledge among fish farmers for ensuring a sustainable livelihood. Encouraging them to maximize outputs and productivity using available resources, Dr. Das underscored the significance of empowering fishers in the pursuit of sustainable practices.
The training program covered essential topics such as water quality management, nursery and rearing techniques for pond culture, enclosure culture for livelihood improvement, and induced breeding and hatchery management. Participants were educated on various aspects of fish feed management and fish disease management. Additionally, the sessions included a comprehensive overview of climate change and its potential impact on inland fisheries.
The fish farmers were introduced to ICAR-CIFRI’s advanced facilities, including the Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental hatchery units, and fish feed mill. The program was strategically designed to enhance the practical skills of farmers, focusing on fish production enhancement in open waters, including ponds and tanks.
As part of the training, a field trip was organized for participants to visit prominent locations such as the Halisahar fish farm, East Kolkata wetland, ornamental fish market, and ICAR-CIFA Kalyani Research Centre. A total of 30 fish farmers and Fisheries Development officers actively participated in the training program, demonstrating a collective commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the region.
