Chennai: Fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard on December 6 for allegedly crossing the maritime border, have returned to Chennai. The incident unfolded when the Sri Lankan Coast Guard surrounded the fishermen during a routine fishing expedition, seizing their boats and detaining the entire crew.

Responding to pleas from the families of the detained fishermen, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu urged the Central government to take immediate action. In a successful diplomatic effort led by the Indian embassy in Sri Lanka, the 21 fishermen were released on December 21. Subsequently, the officials at the embassy facilitated the necessary travel documents for their return.

The fishermen landed at the Chennai airport on an Air India flight in the evening, where officials from the fisheries department welcomed them. The officials further ensured smooth transportation arrangements for the fishermen to reach their respective native villages. This incident highlights the significance of diplomatic channels in resolving cross-border issues and safeguarding the well-being of citizens caught in such situations.
