Sandhya C Vidyadharan, the head of the English department at Sasthamcotta KSMDB College in Kollam, has been honoured with the ‘Best Marine Fish Farmer’ award by the Union government’s National Fisheries Development Board. Her transformative fish farm, spanning three acres on Munroe Island near Ashtamudi lake, impressed authorities with its innovative and sustainable approach.
Inspired by the captivating beauty of Munroe Island, Sandhya and her husband Shilu I G purchased land to venture into fish farming. Initially drawn to shrimp cultivation, the couple faced challenges with the soil composition, leading to losses. Despite setbacks, they transitioned to cultivating ‘karimeen’ (pearl spot) fish seeds, a decision that proved highly successful.
Despite facing a significant setback during the 2018 deluge, where the farm was ravaged, Sandhya persisted with her venture. The annual karimeen yield now stands at approximately five tonnes, fetching up to `600 per kg. The fish has garnered high demand in local hotels and resorts frequented by tourists.
Sandhya, committed to conservation, expressed concern about the changing topography of Munroe Island, known as the ‘sinking island.’ Tidal flooding and sediment buildup pose challenges to the local community’s livelihood. Despite these difficulties, she is exploring the tourism potential of her nearly decade-old venture.
Recognizing her outstanding contribution to marine fish farming, Sandhya received the ‘Best Marine Fish Farmer’ award, which includes a cash prize of `1 lakh and a certificate. Union Minister Parshottam Rupala presented the award at the Global Fisheries Conference hosted by the National Fisheries Development Board in Ahmedabad.
