by Fishery News

Machilipatnam recently served as the venue for a significant workshop on Ocean Information and Advisory Services, organized by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). The workshop, part of a series proposed by MoES to cover the East and West coasts of India, aimed at raising awareness about ocean-related information and services.

The inaugural workshop, held at Machilipatnam, saw the participation of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, along with Dr. Seediri Appalaraju, the AP State Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries. The event focused on the crucial role of providing ocean information, warnings, advisories, and forecasts to various stakeholders, including fisherfolk, coastal populations, government agencies, disaster management organizations, the shipping industry, oil and natural gas industry, Indian Navy, Coast Guard, researchers, academia, and students.

INCOIS, as the key organization for these services, is mandated to offer information and advisory support for weather, climate, ocean and coastal state, hydrology, seismology, and natural hazards. Its mission includes exploring and harnessing marine living and non-living resources in a sustainable manner for the country.

During the workshop, scientists from prominent institutions such as the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training, Forest Survey of India, NIFPHATT, and MSSRF provided valuable insights into tools and techniques for harvesting, post-harvesting, and deep-sea fishing. The event marked a crucial step in promoting understanding and collaboration in the field of ocean information and services.
