Maldives Fisheries Minister Visits ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, the Hon’ble Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture of Maldives, along with Mr. Ahmed Naasir, Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture, paid a visit to the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneswar on November 6, 2023.

During their visit, Dr. Hussain and Mr. Naasir toured the various facilities at ICAR-CIFA, including the Diversified Fish Species Pond, Improved Rohu (Jayanti) Unit, Catfish Unit, Biofloc Unit, Feed Mill, Scampi Unit, and Ornamental Fish Unit. Dr. Hussain engaged with scientists from different units, expressing appreciation for ICAR-CIFA’s significant efforts in diversifying freshwater aquaculture in India. He commended the institute’s genetic improvement work and emphasized the importance of applying scientific practices for sustainable development.

In his address, Dr. Hussain highlighted the crucial role of climate resilience and urged for a scientific approach to achieve sustainable development, advising against becoming climate refugees. He lauded the Indian Government’s flagship developmental program under PMMSY and recognized India’s contribution to maritime and other developments in Maldives. Dr. Hussain expressed satisfaction with ICAR’s integrated research program.

Dr. S.S. Giri, Director (I/C) of ICAR-CIFA, provided a brief overview of the institute’s activities during the interaction program, detailing the various research initiatives. Dr. J.K. Sundaray, Head of the Fisheries Genetics and Biotechnology Division (FGBD), proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the visit.
