Marine Parks: A Global Boost for Fish and Finances

by Fishery News

A recent study, which included Ras Mohammed National Park in the Red Sea, highlights the significant benefits of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) for both fishing and tourism industries. Conducted across more than 50 protected areas in over 30 countries spanning North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, the study reveals that MPAs bring substantial financial gains, sometimes reaching into the billions.

Led by Dr Mark John Costello, a professor at Norway’s Nord University, the study underscores the economic value of ocean protection. Dr Costello emphasises that marine parks have long been underestimated as generators of GDP and employment opportunities.

The research provides compelling evidence that protecting oceanic habitats leads to the replenishment of fish populations, acts as a defence against climate change, and fosters economic growth at both local and national levels. Dr Costello highlights that tourism operators and fisheries are among the beneficiaries of ocean protection measures.

This comprehensive assessment highlights the global significance of MPAs, not only in conserving marine biodiversity but also in contributing to sustainable economic development. With marine parks emerging as key contributors to financial prosperity, the study underscores the importance of prioritising ocean conservation efforts for the benefit of both ecosystems and economies.”
