India’s Commerce Ministry affirmed the robust regulatory framework governing its 548 seafood units, highlighting world-class processing facilities subject to regular inspection by various governmental bodies. This assurance follows recent reports raising concerns over food safety and labour conditions in the Indian shrimp industry.
Emphasising compliance with regulations, the ministry stated that all units are registered with the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), while also holding approval from the Export Inspection Council (EIC) as mandated by law.
These measures underscore India’s commitment to maintaining high standards in seafood processing, ensuring both product safety and labour welfare. The ministry’s statement aims to allay any apprehensions regarding the industry’s practices, affirming its dedication to stringent oversight and adherence to legal mandates.”
