Scientists at ICAR-NBFGR made an exciting discovery in Arunachal Pradesh, India. They found a brand-new type of catfish in the Brahmaputra River area. This fish, named Glyptothorax punyabratai, was spotted in the Tung Stream, a small river connected to the Tissa River.
The discovery was a big deal and got published in a famous science journal called Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The special fish is now stored and studied at the National Fish Museum of ICAR-NBFGR in Lucknow.
Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar, the head of ICAR-NBFGR, highlighted the importance of exploring remote places, especially in northeastern India, to find new fish species. They hope these discoveries can help in both using and protecting these fish better.
This new catfish got its name, Glyptothorax punyabratai, to honor Dr. Punyabarata Das, who played a huge role in fish research as the founder director of ICAR-NBFGR.
