The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MAFWR) of Oman has announced a two-month ban on the catching and trading of kingfish, effective from August 15 to October 15, 2024. This prohibition, outlined in Ministerial Resolution No. (230/2014), is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and protect marine life within the Sultanate.
During the ban, all fishing and trading activities related to kingfish will be strictly prohibited. The Ministry has emphasized that this measure is crucial for safeguarding the kingfish population, allowing it to replenish and ensuring the long-term sustainability of this important species.
In the lead-up to the ban, the MAFWR has urged all fishermen, fish transporters, and businesses involved in the seafood industry to register their existing kingfish stocks. Compliance with the regulations is mandatory, and those failing to do so may face legal consequences.
The government has called for full cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative. The Ministry has made it clear that adherence to the ban is essential not only for protecting the environment but also for preserving the livelihoods of those who depend on the fishing industry.
By implementing this ban, Oman reaffirms its commitment to responsible fisheries management, aiming to balance economic needs with ecological preservation.
