The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai issued an orange alert, as heavy rainfall is predicted in specific areas over the next two days across Tamil Nadu. Coastal regions, including delta areas, are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next five days, as outlined in the bulletin issued by the weather department.
The weather report indicates that on Friday, south Tamil Nadu and certain locations in north Tamil Nadu can expect light to moderate rain. Additionally, heavy rainfall is anticipated in specific districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Pudukottai.
An orange alert, signalling heavy to very heavy rainfall, has been issued for Saturday in four districts—Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkotai, and Sivaganga. Heavy rainfall is also expected in particular areas of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Tenkasi, and Virudhunagar.
The RMC’s Sunday forecast warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas across various districts, including Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari. Similarly, heavy rainfall is expected in specific areas of Villupuram, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Karur, Theni, and Dindigul districts.
Looking ahead to December 18 and 19, the forecast suggests heavy rain in one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, and Thanjavur districts. The RMC’s orange alert emphasizes the need for residents and authorities to remain vigilant during this period of anticipated inclement weather.

Additionally, squally weather with wind speeds of 40-45 kmph, reaching up to 55 kmph, is expected over the southwest Bay of Bengal along and off Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, Kerala coast, and Lakshadweep area from December 15 to 18. Fishermen are strongly advised to refrain from entering the sea during these four days to ensure their safety amidst the challenging weather conditions.
Concerns for fishermen’s safety heighten as moderate rain is forecasted for some areas in Chennai over the next 24 hours, accompanied by generally cloudy sky conditions. Authorities urge fishermen to exercise caution and adhere to the weather advisories during this period.
