Orissa High Court Grants 15-Day Threshold for State’s Chilika Fishing Policy Submission

by Fishery News

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court has given the state government a new 15-day deadline to present the finalized fishing policy for Chilika Lake. This decision comes in response to petitions filed by several primary fishing cooperative societies (PFCS) seeking permission to continue their fishing activities in Chilika.

The PFCS highlighted that the state government, on June 18, 1999, had decided not to grant or renew leases within the lake area for fishing activities, leaving no valid Chilika Sairat recognized for fishing activities.

The emphasis on removing illegal prawn gherries and culture farms has neglected the protection of livelihoods for non-traditional fishermen communities, according to the societies.

Previously, on September 14, the court had directed the state government to submit the finalized policy by November 30. The division bench, led by Acting Chief Justice BR Sarangi and Justice MS Raman, granted an additional 15 days after the government requested more time on Monday. The next hearing for the matter is scheduled for December 18.

Following the court’s directive, the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) had formulated a draft fishing policy for traditional and non-fishermen, which was sent to the state government for finalization.

The court emphasized that the policy should prioritize responsible and sustainable fishing activities, taking into consideration the long-term history of people in and around Chilika.
