Pakistan Hosts Aqua Business Promotion Symposium

Lahore: The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT), and the Fisheries Department Punjab joined forces to organize a pivotal ‘Aqua Business Promotion Symposium’ in Pakistan. The symposium, held at a local hotel, aimed to advance and sustain growth in the country’s aquaculture industry.

This gathering of key stakeholders provided a platform to address crucial aspects of the aquaculture sector, focusing on advisory policies to offer strategic guidance and exploring investment opportunities. Secretary ICI&SDD Ehsan Bhutta inaugurated the symposium, emphasizing the profound impact of the aquaculture sector on Pakistan’s socioeconomic landscape.

Dr. Aamer Irshad, Assistant FAO Representative (Programme), highlighted the UN FAO’s role in the Hand-in-Hand project in Pakistan, emphasizing its significance and objectives. The initiative, launched in 2019, addresses various aspects, including value chain development, agro-industries, water management systems, digital services, and climate challenges.

DG Fisheries Punjab, Dr. Sikender Hayat, shared insights into the indispensable role played by the Fisheries Department Punjab in advancing aquaculture practices within the region. The symposium featured interactive sessions where participants engaged with stakeholders, enhancing their understanding of contributions and innovations in the aquaculture industry.

Technical sessions, led by experts, delved into the prospects of fisheries and aquaculture in Punjab, presented by Dr. Anser Mahmood Chatta, DG Wildlife & Fisheries, South Punjab. Ch. Nabeel Ahmed, representing Thai-Union & AMG Group, Pakistan, explored the role of locally produced shrimp seed and feed in aquaculture, introducing innovative approaches to enhance productivity.

The symposium concluded with insightful panel discussions on “Enabling Environment for Shrimp Farming in Pakistan” and “Investment Opportunities for the Private Sector.” Esteemed panelists shared valuable insights, highlighting the success of collaborative efforts and the collective commitment to propel Pakistan’s aquaculture sector toward sustainable growth and innovation.
