Paradip Fishermen Hit Jackpot with Rare Ghol Fish Catch

by Fishery News

Local fishermen aboard the Parbati trawler in Paradip struck gold on Monday with an extraordinary catch of rare Ghol fishes, locally known as Telia. Weighing in at an impressive 315 kg, this catch became one of the most valuable in Paradip’s fishing history, fetching an astonishing ₹19.50 lakh.

The haul included 17 Ghol fishes, with 10 of them being notably large. Bagula Mallick, a well-known Paradip-based businessman, swiftly acquired this exceptional catch. It is reported that Mallick has plans to sell these rare fishes to Mumbai-based dealers at an even higher price, underscoring the premium value of Ghol in the market.

Scientifically identified as Protonibea diacanthus, the Ghol is renowned as one of the Indo-Pacific region’s most exotic and expensive fish species. Often referred to as ‘Sea Gold,’ the fish’s heart is believed to possess medicinal properties, making it a coveted ingredient in various medicinal formulations. Recognized for its nutritional benefits, the Ghol, also known as the black-spotted croaker, enjoys high demand in East Asia due to its medicinal attributes.

This lucrative catch not only brings financial prosperity to local fishermen but also emphasizes the rich biodiversity and economic potential of Paradip’s marine ecosystem.
