Fisheries officials, aquaculture experts, and scholars from state and central government bodies gathered for a brainstorming session in Imphal. Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research (DCFR), Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, led the discussions on Monday.
Dr. Pandey advised the Director of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, to submit a proposal for establishing a Fish Pathology Laboratory in Manipur under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme through the concerned Ministry. This lab would be crucial for providing diagnostic services for wild and hatchery shellfish and finfish, examining aquatic animals for bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, other parasites, and non-infectious diseases.
He also proposed organizing a state-level workshop for stakeholders in Imphal in December 2024. This workshop would be held after all inputs and real-time data collections are complete.
A fish pathology lab would be an essential asset for Manipur, aiding in the health and sustainability of its aquaculture sector. The lab would use various techniques to ensure the thorough examination and diagnosis of aquatic animal health issues, thereby promoting better management practices.
The session in Imphal highlighted the importance of advanced facilities in boosting the fisheries industry. Dr. Pandey’s initiative aims to enhance the scientific approach to fish health management in Manipur, fostering a healthier and more productive aquaculture environment.
The proposed state-level workshop in December will gather further insights and finalize plans for the lab, ensuring that all stakeholders are well-informed and prepared for the next steps. This move is seen as a significant step forward in the development of Manipur’s fisheries sector, promising better disease management and overall improvement in fish production.
