Location: Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen, Norway
Duration: Fixed term, 3 years (with possibility of extension to 4th year)

Project Focus: The project aims to investigate intracellular bacterial infections in salmonid fish, which pose significant challenges due to antibiotic resistance. Research will focus on understanding the interaction between bacteria and the fish immune system, with a view to developing effective prophylactic measures. Methods include in vitro exposure of leucocytes, immunostaining, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, qPCR, and mRNA transfection of leucocytes.
Qualifications and Personal Qualities:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in fish health or molecular biology within immunology is required.
- Experience in fish immunology and molecular biology methods is essential.
- Competence in working with cell lines, transfection, mRNA technology, and flow cytometry is advantageous.
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and proficiently in English and Norwegian.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Emphasis on relevant methodological experience, personal, and relational qualities.
- Special Requirements: Applicants must comply with the University of Bergen’s regulations for export control systems.
PhD Position Details:
- Fellowship for 3 years with a possibility of a 4th year, including 25% compulsory work such as teaching responsibilities.
- The 4th year is contingent upon candidate qualifications and departmental teaching needs.
Research Training:
- Participation in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within 3 years.
- Admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences within 2 months of starting the position.
