Following suspected chemical discharge from industries in the Edayar region into the Periyar River, Kerala, the police have launched an investigation into the mass fish kill incident. An FIR was registered at Eloor Police Station based on a complaint filed by a fish farmer, Stanly Disilva.
The FIR charges offenses under IPC Section 277 for fouling public springs and reservoirs, and Section 427 for mischief causing damage worth Rs 50 and above. Stanley Disilva, a resident of Kadamakudy, reported significant losses amounting to over Rs 7.5 lakh due to the fish kill, which occurred on May 20 and 21.
Approximately 150 cages used for fish farming were affected, prompting widespread protests. As part of the investigation, water samples collected by fishermen and other agencies will be examined to determine the cause of the fish kill. Authorities will also investigate whether pollutants from industries in the Edayar region contributed to the incident.
The Ernakulam district administration has formed a committee, led by the Fort Kochi sub-collector, to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the matter. The committee includes officials from the fisheries department, Pollution Control Board, irrigation department, health department, and the Kerala Water Authority
While both sections charged in the case are bailable, severe damage could result in the denial of bail under IPC Section 277. The police assured coordination with relevant agencies like the fisheries department and Pollution Control Board to ensure a thorough investigation.
The incident underscores the urgency of addressing industrial pollution and its impact on aquatic ecosystems, highlighting the need for stringent measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
