Puducherry Beachfront Adorns Fish-Shaped Trash Bin to Tackle Marine Pollution

by Fishery News

As part of an initiative to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of microplastics on marine life and to maintain pristine beaches, authorities in Puducherry have unveiled a distinctive fish-shaped trash bin. Sponsored by the multinational conglomerate Godrej as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the installation seeks to encourage responsible waste disposal.

Situated near the Le Cafe restaurant on the Beach Promenade, the fish-shaped trash bin is a collaborative effort involving Keep Namma Pondy Clean, a project by ReCity Network, the Local Administration Department, Puducherry Municipality, and Swachatha Corporation. This innovative approach addresses the pressing environmental concerns associated with marine pollution, emphasizing the importance of clean and healthy oceans while actively reducing plastic waste.

Crafted from iron, the fish sculpture stands approximately 14 feet in length and 7 feet in height, serving both as an artistic installation and a practical trash can. Visitors are prompted to dispose of plastics and other non-biodegradable waste in the specially designated bin. The collected plastic waste will be transported to the Sanitation Park at Dubrayapet, where it undergoes segregation and recycling processes. Notably, the Sanitation Park handles around 4 tonnes of low-value plastic waste daily, contributing to a more sustainable waste management system in the region.
