Aquaculture industry, Zambia seeking an experienced Broodstock Improvement & Fry Collection Superintendent to lead our aquaculture operations. This role involves managing broodstock selection, overseeing genetic improvement programs, and ensuring the efficient collection and management of fry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining high productivity, genetic diversity, and sustainable growth in our aquaculture facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Broodstock Selection & Management:
    • Select high-quality broodstock based on genetic traits, health, and growth performance.
    • Develop and maintain breeding schedules for consistent fry and fingerling production.
    • Implement culling practices to eliminate underperforming broodstock.
  • Genetic Improvement Programs:
    • Lead genetic improvement initiatives focusing on traits such as growth rate, disease resistance, and feed conversion efficiency.
    • Monitor genetic diversity to prevent inbreeding and ensure optimal genetic health.
    • Analyze breeding outcomes and fry health to optimize genetic strategies.
  • Fry Collection & Management:
    • Supervise the collection of eggs and fry post-spawning, ensuring proper handling for maximum survival during incubation and rearing.
    • Enforce quality control processes to ensure only high-quality, healthy fry are used or sold.
    • Monitor fry development and growth during early stages to ensure high survival rates and performance.
  • Facility & Operational Oversight:
    • Manage hatchery and fry collection facilities, ensuring they maintain optimal conditions for breeding and rearing (e.g., water quality, temperature, oxygen levels).
    • Implement and enforce biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Data Management & Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of breeding schedules, broodstock performance, genetic data, and fry production.
    • Use data-driven analysis to guide decisions related to genetic selection, broodstock health, and operational adjustments.
  • Team Leadership & Training:
    • Supervise and train the hatchery team in broodstock care, genetic selection, and fry collection processes.
    • Provide ongoing staff development in the latest techniques for broodstock management, genetic improvement, and fry handling best practices.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries & Aquaculture or related field.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience in broodstock management, genetic improvement programs, and hatchery operations within the aquaculture industry.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Strong understanding of aquaculture breeding systems, fish reproductive biology, and hatchery operations.
    • Expertise in genetics, selective breeding, and data analysis of genetic traits (growth rate, disease resistance, feed conversion efficiency).
    • Experience in fry collection, incubation, and early-stage fish development.

 

Skills & Competencies:

  • Leadership & Team Management: Ability to lead, manage, and train a team of hatchery workers and geneticists.
  • Problem Solving: Capable of troubleshooting issues related to broodstock health, genetic improvements, and fry survival rates.
  • Innovation: Proactive in adopting new technologies and methodologies to improve breeding outcomes and farm efficiency.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills for reporting, coordination with farm management, and staff training.
