CHENNAI: Fish vendors have been relocated from the Loop Road near Marina to the newly established fish market in the vicinity, with Mylapore MLA Dha Velu overseeing the process on Saturday. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced that the remaining vendors will be transitioned to the new facility following the conclusion of the Indian Air Show on Sunday.

The space previously occupied by these vendors has recently been designated as a non-vending zone by the GCC. Velu confirmed, “The relocation process is expected to be finalized by October 7.” The modern fish market, inaugurated by Chief Minister M K Stalin on August 12, had remained largely unutilized until last Friday. The allocation of stalls took place on August 27.

Constructed at a cost of ₹9.97 crore, the market boasts 366 stalls, with 332 allocated to fish vendors based on a 2019 enumeration. However, some vendors not listed in the enumeration have also expressed interest in securing stalls. Velu addressed this issue, stating, “We have instructed the officials to document their requests. With assistance from local residents, we will verify their claims and subsequently allocate shops to them.”
