Russia Considers Ban on Faroe Islands Fish Imports in Retaliatory Move

The Federal Fisheries Agency in Russia has put forward a proposal to the government suggesting a ban on the import of fish products from the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The move is presented as a response to protective actions against Russian fishing enterprises. The primary products affected by the potential ban are frozen fish, including herring, mackerel, and capelin. Statistics reveal a 50.4% decrease in the volume of imports from the Faroe Islands between 2018 and 2022.

The Federal Fisheries Agency assures that the proposed measure will not impact food security, as Russian fishing companies can fulfill the domestic demand for these fish products. Additionally, the agency highlights the potential for increased production capacity, indicating no risk of decreased production of frozen fish. The suggested ban is seen as a strategic move to counter protective measures imposed on Russian fishing interests.
