Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is gearing up to host the third edition of the Saudi International Marine Exhibition (SIMEC) from February 4 to 6, showcasing its commitment to advancing sustainable seafood production. With the backing of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) and the National Livestock & Fisheries Development Program (NLFDP), this event stands as the largest of its kind in the country, reflecting the government’s active involvement in fostering the growth of the crucial seafood sector.
Focusing on Sustainability and Aquaculture, the exhibition aims to underscore the significance and sustainability of the seafood industry, with a special emphasis on aquaculture and algae production. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes sustainable development and economic diversification. The domestic aquaculture sector has experienced a remarkable 400 percent growth from 2015 to 2022, showcasing the immense potential within the industry.
The expanded exhibition space of 8,000 square meters for this year’s SIMEC is expected to accommodate over 12,000 visitors, surpassing the previous edition’s 10,000 delegates. The increased interest and investment in the seafood sector are evident in this growing attendance. A notable addition to this year’s event is a seafood cookery contest, endorsed by the World Associations of Chefs Societies and the Saudi Arabian Chefs Association. The contest will provide Saudi chefs with a platform to showcase their culinary skills, creating themed dishes using aquaculture species such as salmon, seabass, gilthead seabream, and shrimp.
Key industry players, including the National Aquaculture Group (NAQUA), Jazan Energy and Development Company (JAZADCO), Tharawat Seas, and Tabuk Fisheries, are expected to participate in the exhibition. MEWA has also initiated programs aimed at capacity building and market analysis for local seafood products, reinforcing the domestic industry and promoting self-sufficiency. The SIMEC Expo 2024 serves as a crucial platform for industry stakeholders to network, explore new opportunities, and contribute to the Kingdom’s sustainable development journey.
