Save Baby Fish: MPEDA and NETFISH Push for Square Mesh Nets

by Fishery News

The government-managed Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Network for Fish Quality Management and Sustainable Fishing (NETFISH) have urged fishing trawlers to use square mesh nets to protect juvenile fish. The indiscriminate exploitation of young fish is a significant factor behind the depletion of fish stocks in the sea.

MPEDA-NETFISH state coordinator Subhrakanta Mohapatra emphasized the importance of using square mesh with a cod end and a size of more than 30 mm. This allows small fish to escape, ensuring they can continue to grow and reproduce. “We organized a meeting in Paradip to convince marine fishermen to adopt square mesh nets. We advised them against using small diamond nets that trap and kill baby fish,” Mohapatra stated.

The fisheries sector relies heavily on healthy marine biodiversity, but current fishing practices are often unsustainable. MPEDA and NETFISH are advocating for the adoption of eco-friendly fishing methods to preserve the marine ecosystem and ensure the long-term viability of the fisheries sector.

Eco-friendly fishing practices are essential for the future of the fishing industry. By switching to square mesh nets, fishermen can contribute to the conservation of marine life and the sustainable development of the sector. The meeting in Paradip is a step towards educating and encouraging fishermen to make this crucial change for a better future.
