The Sindh government is poised to collaborate with a Chinese company, Hengzhou Jingjing Private Group, to clean the Karachi Fish Harbour, a critical step towards lifting the European Union’s (EU) ban on fish and seafood exports from Pakistan due to sanitation compliance issues.

In a high-level meeting focused on the sanitation of the Karachi Fish Harbour Authority, Najmi Alam, who presided over the session, emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to addressing the sanitation concerns that led to the EU’s export ban. The meeting saw participation from key stakeholders, including Engineer Muhammad Khalid, a representative of the Hengzhou Jingjing Private Group.

Najmi Alam highlighted that three companies involved in the production and export of fish have already been declared compliant with EU standards, with a fourth company expected to receive clearance soon. He stated, “We will enter into a cleaning contract with Hengzhou Jingjing Private Group because they possess the most modern cleaning machinery and have prior experience working with the Sindh Solid Waste Management.”

This partnership is seen as a strategic move to restore the fish and seafood export sector, which has been hampered by the EU ban. The collaboration with the Chinese company is expected to bring advanced sanitation practices to the Karachi Fish Harbour, ensuring that the facility meets international hygiene standards, thereby reopening the European market to Pakistani seafood.
