Thailand Fisheries Department unveiled a new clownfish breed, named “Gold x Thunder Maroon,” distinguished by maroon-spotted white sides. Department director-general Chalermchai Suwannarak revealed that this new species is a hermaphrodite, with males having the ability to transform into females, while the reverse is not possible. Males can commence breeding at six months, while females must wait until they reach 18 months of age.
The “Gold x Thunder Maroon” clownfish is the result of a carefully executed breeding project initiated in 2020. By studying purebred Gold Nugget Maroon and Thunder Maroon clownfish, the department successfully crossbred them, creating a distinctive pattern passed on to subsequent generations.
Characterized by an average size of 17 centimeters and a potential lifespan of up to 15 years, the newly introduced breed presents an exciting prospect for fish enthusiasts. However, the department is currently evaluating the breeding costs to determine the feasibility of large-scale production for local fish breeders.
Chalermchai Suwannarak expressed optimism about the clownfish becoming a new attraction in the world of fishkeeping. Nevertheless, he cautioned against keeping them in the same aquarium as predatory fish, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a suitable environment.
It is crucial to note that the department strongly discourages releasing these crossbred clownfish into natural water sources due to potential ecological impacts. As the project unfolds, the Thailand Fisheries Department aims to strike a balance between innovation and environmental responsibility, showcasing the unique “Gold x Thunder Maroon” clownfish to captivate and educate fish enthusiasts.
