The Minister Launches Groyne Construction at Sanguthurai Beach on Thursday

by Fishery News

The commencement of the construction of a groyne at Sanguthurai beach marked a significant step towards mitigating severe sea erosion in the area, particularly during the westerly wind season between June and September. The hon. Minister for Dairy Development, T. Mano Thangaraj, initiated the project along with Nagercoil Corporator R. Magesh. The construction of the groin was based on the urgent necessity to solve the long-lasting issue of beach erosion that resulted in the destruction of boats and fishing gear because of high tides.

Groyne construction is meant to protect Sanguthurai beach from the relentless forces of weather. This protects coastal areas and their assets so that they do not experience further erosion and damage. Not only that, Minister Mano Thangaraj opened the re-laying of the Madanvilai-Aanaikuzhi road under Reethapuram town panchayat, along with other road works in Kallukoottam, Mayilaadi, and Theroor town panchayats. At another function that took place at the Collectorate, Minister Thangaraj issued orders for people to build new houses whose homes were severely damaged during the mid-December rains to 13 beneficiaries.

For each house, a budget of ₹4 lakh will be allocated to cater to the needs of those who lost their homes. In addition to that, the minister spearheaded the distribution of two power tillers and four grass cutters to the local farmers with the aim of improving productivity and effectiveness. During the distribution ceremony, Collector P.N. Sridhar was also present, demonstrating the government’s interest in both the coastal protection measures and the agricultural growth initiatives in the area.
