Shopian: District Development Commissioner (DDC) Faz Lul Haseeb spearheaded a significant trout fish stocking operation in Shopian to fortify the fish population in the district’s natural water bodies. The initiative involved releasing 10,000 Rainbow Trout Yearlings from the Trout Fish Farming Project in Kokernag into the Upper Rambaira Stream at Heerpora.

The stocked trout, artificially raised at the hatchery, aims to supplement the existing wild fish populations in the stream, providing ecological benefits and enhancing the potential for eco-tourism activities. The stocking, carried out at various locations, is part of the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fisheries practices and boost tourism-related activities in the region.

Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Assistant Director Fisheries, highlighted the positive trend in the stream over the past few years, attracting an increasing number of anglers to the area for fishing activities. The stocking initiative is expected to further stimulate tourism and fisheries-related endeavours in Shopian.

DDC Faz Lul Haseeb emphasized that such practices contribute to eco-tourism and angling activities, ultimately benefiting the overall environmental health of the region. The event was attended by Dy DEO Shopian Jahangeer Ahmad, AD Fisheries, and other officials, signalling a collaborative approach towards the conservation and promotion of aquatic resources in Shopian.
