The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has successfully completed the reclaiming operations of fishing boats submerged in the aftermath of a major fire within an astonishing ten days. The VPA swiftly deployed heavy-duty cranes, each with a capacity of 150 metric tons, to salvage the sunken vessels in the fishing harbour.
The tragic incident unfolded on the night of November 19, when a massive fire engulfed the fishing harbour, resulting in the complete destruction or severe damage of approximately 29 to 30 fishing boats, with an additional 18 boats suffering partial damage. The wrecks of these vessels were submerged in the harbour’s waters, presenting a challenging salvage operation.
The VPA, in collaboration with the State Fisheries Department, executed a meticulously planned salvage operation. Undersea divers were engaged to navigate the underwater complexities, including cutting wreckage and lifting the boats from the water. This careful process ensured the prevention of pilferage or mishaps during the salvage operation.
The entire operation was conducted in coordination with the State Fisheries Department, the Fishing Boat Operators Association, and the State Police. The efforts were applauded by the Fishing Boat Operators Association, the Fishing Community, and the State Fisheries Department. Chairperson of VPA, M Angamuthu, and his dedicated team received accolades for their prompt and efficient assistance in the restoration of the Fishing Harbour.
The successful salvage operation stands as a testament to the VPA’s commitment to maritime safety and underscores their ability to respond swiftly to crises, ensuring the timely recovery of vital assets for the local fishing community.
