Visakhapatnam Port has emerged as the leading port for marine product shipments in India, handling 3,14,199 tonnes valued at ₹17,983.99 crore ($2,194 million) in FY24. This achievement places Visakhapatnam ahead of JNPT, which handled 2,40,253 tonnes worth ₹6,395.70 crore ($779.49 million), and Cochin Port, which managed 1,81,400 tonnes valued at ₹6,120 crore ($746.43 million).
Chennai Port and Kolkata Port ranked fourth and fifth, handling 1,01,903 tonnes and 94,559 tonnes, valued at ₹4,655 crore and ₹4,452 crore, respectively. Other ports collectively handled 8,49,289 tonnes worth ₹20,915 crore.
India’s seafood exports reached an all-time high volume of 17,81,602 tonnes worth ₹60,523.89 crore in FY24, despite challenges in major export destinations. Marine products were shipped to 132 countries, with the US and China as the major importers. Frozen shrimp remained the top export item.
Industry sources highlight Andhra Pradesh as the major shrimp-producing region, thanks to its thriving aquaculture industry and high percentage of Vannamei shrimp varieties. Exports from Odisha also contributed significantly to Visakhapatnam’s leading position. For JNPT, shipments from Gujarat played a crucial role in securing the second slot.
