Women’s Achievements in Fisheries: CMFRI Honors Trailblazers

by Fishery News

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the ICAR-CMFRI has honored the two pathbreakers, Ivy Jose and K.G. Rethi Kumari, for their outstanding contributions to the fisheries sector in recent publications. Hence, these ladies not only put themselves on the map but also serve as a source of encouragement for other people occupying the same industry. Ivy Jose from Munambam and Rethi Kumari from Onattukara, in Alappuzha district, are excelling in the production of quality fish manure and the culture of ornamental fish, respectively.

The entrepreneurs acknowledge the STI scheme of the CMFRI’s Science-Technology Innovation as the supporting factor and the causative agent that allows reality to emerge from their dream. Jose’s way started with training programs at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra of CMFRI, which he attended to learn about the organic preparation of fish manure. Inspired by the idea of her fish waste utilization, she has an initiative that she named ‘Ivy’s Agro-Hub’ near Munambam Harbour. Her eco-friendly product, a combination of fish waste and supplemental microorganisms, not only improves crop productivity but also strengthens soil health, showcasing the vision of food security through environmentally friendly farming.

Similarly, Kumari, who was crazy about ornamental fish farming, bloomed, and her venture turned into a successful business that was called ‘Dear Guppy’ located in Alappuzha. She embarked on transforming her hobby into a blooming business venture after she received the backing of the STI Hub, which was solely managed by CMFRI, and guidance from the experts. Eventually, her business proved to be a great income-generating source for her family and a platform for the employment of other women in the neighbourhood as well.

The celebration of Women’s Day in Kochi featured Chitra Arun as the chief guest, who was a popular playback singer. Badung pointed to the question of women’s financial autonomy and thereby wholeheartedly supported the words of CMFRI Director A. Gopalakrishnan on promoting gender equality and capacity building for women in the fisheries sector. Through their dedication and hard work, women like Ivy Jose and Rethi Kumari are not only breaking stereotypes but also driving positive change in the fisheries industry, inspiring others with their entrepreneurial spirit and determination.
