BJPs 2024 Manifesto Aims to Boost Fisheries Sector

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set forth a comprehensive plan to uplift the fisheries sector as outlined in its 2024 election manifesto. Promising to modernize fishing infrastructure, provide financial support, and initiate skill development programs, the BJP aims to enhance the welfare and prosperity of fishermen across the nation.

Central to the manifesto is the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, aimed at increasing fish production and boosting annual seafood exports. The party pledges to strengthen insurance coverage under this scheme through technological interventions for efficient assessment.

In a bid to empower coastal communities, the BJP plans to develop production and processing clusters, with a special focus on women. This initiative seeks to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and promote gender inclusivity in the fisheries sector.

The manifesto also highlights initiatives to promote seaweed cultivation and pearl farming under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, further diversifying income sources for fishermen.

Recognizing the fisheries sector as a ‘Sunrise Sector’, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying notes its significant contribution to sustaining the livelihoods of around 30 million people, particularly from marginalized communities. India’s status as the third-largest fish producing country, with a record production of 175.45 lakh tons in FY 2022-23, underscores the sector’s importance.

To enhance productivity, the BJP proposes establishing a network of Nucleus Breeding Centres and Brood Banks. Additionally, the party emphasizes the use of technology for farm biosecurity, disease management, and growth monitoring in aquatic animals.

With its holistic approach towards fisheries development, the BJP’s manifesto signals a commitment to fostering growth, sustainability, and inclusivity in the sector, promising a brighter future for fishermen and coastal communities across India.
