City of Karratha Councillors have given the green light to a groundbreaking aquaculture project aimed at diversifying the local economy. WRS Bioproducts’ development application for an algae farm on the salt flats at the eastern end of Karratha Airport has been approved, expanding the algae ponds from two 60ha lakes to two larger 98ha algae lakes.
The proposed WRS Bioproducts algae farm, situated in the designated Eco Hub area, is set to produce high-value beta-carotene in two hyper-saline and shallow man-made lakes. Beta-carotene, widely used in dietary supplements, functional food, food colouring, cosmetics, and animal food supplements, is expected to be a key output of the venture.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott expressed enthusiasm about the approved project, emphasizing its potential to bring another sustainable industry to the region. “We are focused on diversifying the local economy and supporting new industries as part of our goal to improve sustainability and our vision to be Australia’s most liveable regional City,” stated Mayor Scott.
The algae farm joins other ventures like Rainstorm and EcoMag, already operational in the Eco Hub, contributing to the city’s vision of fostering innovation and sustainability. Mayor Scott highlighted the City’s commitment to minimizing the impact of the development on the surroundings, including the Karratha Airport.
WRS Bioproducts Executive Chairman Harry Rosen highlighted Karratha’s suitability for sustainable aquaculture, stating, “The Pilbara is the best region for algae production.” Rosen emphasized the significance of aquaculture, noting that algae is seven times more effective at capturing carbon than land-based plants.
While the endorsed proposal marks a significant step forward, further legislative approvals are still required to proceed with the innovative algae farm project in Karratha.
